The Easiest Way to Lose Weight – Calorie Counting
With the amount of content devoted solely to diets, working out, losing weight and so on, you would think the consumers of the Internet are fitness freaks, Greek gods and goddesses roaming the planet, brightening up wherever they go with nothing more than their mere presence.
But it just so happens, that less is more, and more definitely doesn’t mean better.
Let me explain: the amount of content out is not directly proportionate to good content. Simultaneously, just because you read something online, claiming “this secret” is all you need to get that beach body, doesn’t mean you will get one.
So taking everything you read, including this very piece with a grain of salt, read on to understand how you can actually lose weight.
The Hard Work
Like most things, losing weight is simple, but isn't always easy. It’s about putting in the hard yards, and most importantly staying disciplined. It's not going to happen overnight. The implementation of a change in diet isn't easy, and thus can be off-putting. There will be hiccups, there will be obstacles, there are no shortcuts and it will undoubtedly test your mettle.
The problem with most of what you consume online is the claim that a hack, a shortcut and a secret will help you lose x number of kilos in x number of months. The biggest issue what that claim is that it’s impossible to track for every individual, and thus vague enough to evade any legal repercussions. What this means is, things like discipline and long term planning are scarcely mentioned, and thus leave people with the idea that these hacks can work for them, and will result in a six-pack in 3 weeks.
That is the wrong mindset to have.
The onus thus comes on you as the consumer to understand that these things take time, but most importantly, discipline.
What You Can Do
So now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get down to brass taxes. Losing weight is simple: all you have to do is burn more than you consume.
Think about that for a second, if the amount of energy you put in is more than that you burn, you will not lose weight. Calories, are thus a very simple indicator of what to track. To begin with, you need to first know what your optimal (maintenance level) calorie consumption should be. This number will surprise you in that you don’t need to go on a 1200 calorie diet. More often than not, if you go 200-400 calories below your maintenance, you will lose weight.
It’s just that simple.
Why is it not talked about more? Two reasons.
First, it’s unglamorous, and unfashionable. With the crazy, 1200 calorie diets, the Keto diets, the gluten-free diets, the fat-free, sugar-free diets and so on, nobody wants to here that you can lose weight by eating what you normally eat, just less of it.
Second, and this is the most important reason: calorie counting isn't an exact science. Most of the nutritional information on a food packages are nothing more than estimates. You have to bear that in mind. While this is vague, and could be perceived as unnecessarily unhelpful, it actually is quite freeing. You don’t need to be exact.
Nothing is ever going to be truly precise when it comes to losing weight. So free yourself of this dilemma by accepting the vagueness and start putting it into practice.
Google offers a number of different calorie counters. You simply need to put in your current weight, your height and how active you are daily. Additionally, you need to be brutally honest. Pick a number you want to come down to and start putting it into practice. You will see results.
Calorie counting is simple, easy to implement, but takes discipline. It will mean that for the first few weeks you need to track everything you put into your mouth. That extra biscuit you take with coffee may not seem like much, but until you have a degree of confidence in knowing what you eat, track everything.
4-6 weeks is a good parameter. Start there. Track everything for this period initially, stick to the same foods, allowing yourself one day a week where you eat a little more, and stay patient. You will lose weight.
